The history of Christian churches is characterized by power struggles, competition, and even violence, as different factions sought dominance, each claiming to be "the one true church of Christ." Efforts were made to keep the Bible in Latin to control its interpretation and manipulate the faithful. Atrocities were committed in Christ's name, including the murder of leaders and the suffering of the poor, as individuals allowed themselves to be subjugated by those they believed to be morally superior.
Philosophers and historians often refer to this part of human history as "dark," suggesting it reflects a time we have moved beyond. We assume we are more enlightened now and can differentiate between genuine faith and deceit. However, similar groupthink still exists today, as many lose sight of the true purpose of their beliefs.
To quote Crowley:
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law! Refuse this and fall under the curse of destiny. Divide will against itself, the result is impotence and strife, strife-in-vain. The Law condemns no man. Accept the Law, and everything is lawful. Refuse the Law, you put yourself beyond its pale. It is the Law that Jesus Christ, or rather the Gnostic tradition of which the Christian-legend is a degradation, attempted to teach; but nearly every word he said was misinterpreted and garbled by his enemies, particularly by those who called themselves his disciples. – Chapter VIII – Genesis Libri Al – Equinox of The Gods (1991, 93 Publishing)
It seems that some individuals are determined to repeat history by claiming to be the sole representatives of Thelema despite clear evidence to the contrary. Their attempts to regulate the A.'.A.'. have resulted in a tarnished image of Thelema, leading to inaction and missed opportunities over the decades. If given the chance, they would likely label us as heretics and send us to The Supreme and Holy Cheezewiz, or rather, Pontius Pilate, much like the Pharisees of old.
Control is the real issue here, overshadowing Thelema and its true meaning. Although the writings have entered the public domain, they tend to emphasize using the Prophet as a brand rather than fostering genuine understanding. When was the last time "Crowley's Order" and "Largest Thelemic Organization" (TM, All Rights Reserved) ever published something? As for me, I will continue on my path. Others can say what they want, but it won't alter the truth. Those who seek power will face their own consequences, much like Oregon's infamous exploding whale.
If you find yourself in a situation where you have to explain this to a newbie, please refer to the children's story called The Last Dragon.
