Don't write to make money. That's lost cause. Most of today's writers do it because they can then say they are writers. It kind of appeals to them in the same way that playing at a pub for appeals to musicians that want to hit the big time.
I know that makes me sound like an asshole, but it's true.
Write because you can't help it. Write because it makes you feel good. Because you love it.
A writer is a person that writes. If you can change your perspective to that, then you will be a hell of a lot happier. And if you can't, maybe writing isn't the thing for you.
But if you are a writer, don't forget there's lots of things to write about. One has to find their niche. An unsuccessful writer May simply be writing in the wrong genre. Try not to paint yourself into a corner, even though a certain amount of it is unavoidable.
I hope it doesn't sound harsh. I don't intend it to be. Be who you are. If you are a writer, then do that and you will be happy. If you're not happy, you have to find out why. But if you're not happy as a writer because you're not making money, then I dare say you might be doing it for the wrong reasons.
That said, let's be realistic. The problem with getting your work out there, is that self-publishing has made everyone an "author," the same way that DIY music recording has made everyone a "musician," or the digital camera made everyone a "photographer" with a little help from photoshop, of course.
The end result is that the really good writing, the really good music, the real good photography is lost in a pool of mediocrity. If you think things are bad now, wait until "authors" begin to use AI to come up with their material.
Good times. For this first time in history we have a plethora of choices, none of which are good.
