With each passing day, the cycle spins on,
Firstborn sacrificed, in a battle long gone.

Before names were set and before time learned to count itself, a human was born with two fires in the chest.

One fire reached upward and was called Dream. It spoke through images, longings, and impossible horizons. The other fire, called Work, reached downward. It communicated through repetition, discipline, and the slow shaping of matter.

When the fires burned apart, humans suffered. Dream alone scorched the mind and left the hands empty. Work alone hardened the body and buried the heart. Only when both were sustained together did breath move freely between them, and life gain direction.

As a child, the human carried a star. It was heavy and bright and refused to be hidden. The elders warned, “That light will blind you. The world does not bend to stars.” But the child continued walking, guided by that burning weight.

Over time, the body established its limits. Bones understood their boundaries. The mind adopted the word impossible. The star did not disappear; it sank into the dark soil of the unconscious, where it shattered into symbols, cravings, and callings.

From there, it started to speak more softly, teaching the human through urges instead of visions, placing tools in ready hands so the old light might someday return, not as a dream of escape, but as a shape in the world.

Years went by. Pain arrived, as it always does. Stones took shape inside the body, as tough as silent grief. The blade was ready. The future shrank to one cold choice. But an elder who remembered older words offered a cup of steaming water and said, “Drink angel’s hair.”

“What is angel’s hair?” asked the one still questioning names. “It’s corn silk,” the elder replied, “but corn silk is just a thing. Angel’s Hair understands why stones must leave.”

The cup was drunk. The stones loosened their grip and moved away. Thus, humans learned that words are not just labels but vessels, and meaning can heal where force cannot.

Still searching, the human gave up. First pleasure. Then possessions. Then comfort. Each sacrifice was worn like a badge of devotion. Each ache was counted as proof.

Finally, the human approached a newly arrived Master and said, “I have renounced much. I suffer greatly. Why has awakening not come?”

The Master listened and responded, “You have borne every burden faithfully except the one you refuse to let go of.”

“What burden is that?”

“Your suffering,” said the Master. “You have mistaken endurance for wisdom and pain for purpose.”

In that moment, the fires aligned. Dream remembered its direction. Work remembered its meaning. The star rose, not toward the sky, but into the hands.

And the human understood: life is not about abandoning dreaming, worshipping effort, hoarding pain, or submitting to the tyranny of names. It is the art of tending what burns, speaking what opens, and letting go of what no longer teaches.

There was a knight who devoted much of his time to hunting. It happened one day, as he was pursuing this diversion, that he was met by a lame lion, who showed him his foot. The knight dismounted and drew from it a sharp thorn and then applied an unguent to the wound, which speedily healed it.

A while after this, the king of the country hunted in the same wood, caught that lion, and held him captive for many years.

Now, the knight, having offended the king, fled from his anger to the very forest in which he had been accustomed to hunt. There he betook himself to plunder and spoiled and slew a multitude of travelers. But the king’s sufferance was exhausted; he sent out an army, captured him, and condemned him to be delivered to a fasting lion. The knight was accordingly thrown into a pit and remained in terrified expectation of the hour when he should be devoured. But the lion, considering him attentively, and remembering his former friend, fawned upon him and remained seven days with him, destitute of food.

When this reached the ears of the king, he was struck with wonder and directed the knight to be taken from the pit. “Friend,” said he, “by what means have you been able to render the lion harmless?”

“As I once rode along the forest, my lord, that lion met me lame. I extracted from his foot a large thorn, and afterward healed the wound, and therefore he has spared me.”

“Well,” returned the king, “since the lion has spared you, I will, for this time, ratify your pardon. Study to amend your life.”

The knight gave thanks to the king and ever afterwards conducted himself with all propriety. He lived to a good old age and passed away in peace.

Application: The knight is the world, the lame lion is humanity: the thorn, original sin, drawn out by baptism (or in our case, by discovering our divine nature). The pit represents penitence, whence safety is derived.
